Conscience

The mission of this project is to support any individual, who by an act of conscience, objects to personally participating in combat activities of our nation's military forces. Activities have included counseling, legal support, organizing public solidarity with individual conscientious objectors who desire that kind of support, outreach and educational activity on the alternatives to war and military participation. If you are interested in getting involved, Conscience needs volunteers who like working on CO and other military discharge issues without fanfare. Contact the TMC here if you wish to get invoved.

Demilitarize Pittsburgh

Aims to research, expose and confront the powerful corporate interests behind the war machine. Demilitarize Pittsburgh researchers the contracts and practices of local war profiteers, produces educational materials, organizes educational events and protests, and coordinates direct community outreach. Food Not Bombs

Is a radical movement of people dedicated to community organizing through food sharing. Members share vegan meals with hungry people in Pittsburgh two days a week as well as protest war, poverty, occupation, the globalization of the economy, restrictions to the movements of people, and the destruction of the Earth. Urban Arts Project

Provides networking, guidance and technical support to socially-conscious artists who are interested in journalism, creative writing, cultural arts and poetry. Through partnerships with newspapers, grassroots organizers and community-based organizations, artists and writers have an opportunity to showcase their talents, network with other artists, publish articles, perform at local venues and display or sell artwork at select cultural events. Our primary mission is to foster an environment where artists showcase their creativity while developing a range of professional and interpersonal skills. Participants will learn how to raise awareness of important social issues via the use of poetry, art and multi-media. Westmoreland Marcellus Citizens Group

The Westmoreland Marcellus Citizens Group (WMCG) consists of volunteers from all over Westmoreland County representing small townships and municipalities. Our mission is to educate citizens on the impacts of Marcellus Shale hydrofracturing on the health, natural environment, air, water, and land of each community as well as the long-term economic impact. We help citizens recognize the implications of land-use ordinances by offering events and workshops regionally. We meet locally and online to transfer information and resources to townships and municipalities and meet monthly as a county group. We work with many groups in Western Pennsylvania to implement successful strategies.

The Pittsburgh Tote Bag Project

The Pittsburgh Tote Bag Project collects gently used and new tote bags for distribution to food pantries throughout the region. We strive to make the food distribution process more dignified by providing reliable bags in which groceries can be transported home. We also hope to reduce the number of disposable bags used by the food pantries. Our project had official drop-off spots around the region. We also work with individuals organizing tote and/or tote/food drives as well as the corporate community. Pittsburgh Anti-Sweatshop Community Alliance

The Pittsburgh Anti Sweatshop Community Alliance is building a bridge from PNC Park to the floor of the global sweatshop... with special attention to the trade unionists in Bangladesh, the National Garment Workers Federation of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Center for Workers Solidarity. We are part of SweatFree Communities, trying to implement the City and County Anti Sweatshop Ordinances and Ed Rendell's Executive Order for the State. We have hosted meetings with three Workers Rights Consortium college administrations, soliciting testimony from workers in factories sewing Pittsburgh Pirates apparel.
