2019 New Person of The Year Award

The Thomas Merton Center Honors (2).png

The Thomas Merton Center is proud to present the 2019 New Person of the Year Award to Wasi Mohamed – an activist working to expand civil rights and bridge gaps between communities. We hope you will consider becoming an event sponsor or purchasing program book ads and tickets.

Wasi Mohamed is a life-long Pennsylvania resident. In 2015, Wasi was selected to be the Executive Director of the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh where he worked to empower, educate, and unite the diverse community in Western PA through social services and outreach programs. Wasi was appointed to several groups by local leadership including the Commission on Human Relations and Welcoming Pittsburgh Commission in 2016 by Mayor Bill Peduto, was elected to the ACLU Pennsylvania State Board of Directors, and named the Executive Director of Emgage PA, where he coordinated political education and organizing activities throughout the commonwealth. He was also appointed by Governor Tom Wolf to serve on the Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs.

Friday, June 7th is the deadline for including ads and sponsorship information in the program book. Tickets are $30 in advance and $40 at the door and, as always, we will accept donations towards scholarships providing free tickets to guests positively impacted by Wasi’s work. We thank you for any level of support you can offer, and hope to see you at the award celebration.
