"Information is the currency of democracy" – Thomas Jefferson
The Thomas Merton Center presents the 2004 Thomas Merton Award honoring Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now! on Thursday, November 18, 2004. Come hear Amy Goodman speak about her new book, The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing Oily Politicians, War Profiteers and the Media That Love Them. All peace-loving people should mark November 18th, 2004 on their calendars and plan to attend the annual Thomas Merton Award dinner at which the Thomas Merton Center will honor Amy Goodman, the host and creator of Democracy Now! The ceremony will be held at the Sheraton Inn, at Station Square. The reception begins at 6pm, followed by dinner at 7pm. Amy Goodman started working in radio in 1985, producing the Evening News at a New York community station, WBAI. Eleven years later Goodman launched Democracy Now!, an independent daily radio and television news program that airs on 225 stations, thus pioneering the largest public media collaboration in the U.S. Goodman also wrote the national Bestseller, The Exception to the Rulers. Goodman is an award-winning journalist and documentary producer. In the early nineties Goodman traveled to East Timor to document the Indonesian occupation there. She and her colleague were abused by Indonesian soldiers. Their documentary, "Massacre: The Story of East Timor" won numerous awards. Goodman also produced the award-winning "Drilling and Killing: Chevron and Nigeria’s Oil Dictatorship". Amy Goodman will be speaking at the annual award dinner on Thursday, November 18, 2004 at the Sheraton Station Square. The social hour starts at 6pm and dinner is at 7pm. Tickets are $35. Please call the TMC at 412-361-3022 to make your reservation today. Or simply mail in a check made payable to the "Thomas Merton Center" to 5125 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15224. The raffle will replace the silent auction again this year and features three prizes - a week at a 2 bedroom condo (sleeps six) at Treasure Lake, on the edge of the Allegheny Forest, in northwestern Pennsylvania, with many recreational facilities, and the second and third prizes are packages of pairs of tickets to cultural and entertainment events around the city. Each chance is $5 and can be purchased by calling or visiting the TMC. Your support helps the Merton Center and its many projects continue doing the work that we do. Thank you!
