Intern for Book'Em
Book 'Em offers unpaid internships on an ongoing basis. Book 'Em internships are ideal for independent, self-starters looking to make a big impact in a small social justice-education organization.
We are currently recruiting interns to help with the following projects:
CARPENTRY--repairing old and building new bookshelves in our donation library. Other volunteers will help you gather donated materials and help you with the construction--we need your expertise and experience!
CREATIVE FUNDRAISING--exploring new ways to bring in money. Past and current projects have included: tabling at community events, organizing benefit events, online book sales, keeping in touch with past donors, pursuing media coverage, public donation jars, selling prisoner art, grants, and much, much more.
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS--building connections with other community organizations. Your projects could include connecting with religious groups that can bring volunteers, setting up a volunteer exchange with another volunteer group, taking our information table to community events, distributing information from other groups to prisoners, and getting us plugged into area volunteer networks.
LIBRARIAN--work on the "day to day" aspects of keeping Book 'Em running: routinely (re)organize and re-stock the donation library shelves, sort books, work with volunteers on mailing boxes of books directly to prison libraries, solicit quality donations from book stores and libraries, manage outflow of 'junk' books, and more.
Past interns have been students from Amherst, Point Park, Chatham, and Pitt, as well as a number of non-student community members. Internships can be one month to one year long and are tailored to your individual interests. Interns should be available to work at least several Sundays per month (3-8pm) as well as sometime during the week (M-F 9-5). Scheduling is flexible.
