A Week of Action for Peace and Justice

The Thomas Merton Center, the TMC’s Anti-War Committee, Pittsburgh Organizing Group, Black Voices for Peace and Students in Solidarity have been busy organizing a series of events leading up to and following the elections. Below is a sidebar of what’s planned so far.

October 30 – Teach-In
Black Voices for Peace presents “The War, The Election and the Black Community.” The Kingsley Association (6435 Frankstown Ave., East Liberty), 9pm to 1am.

November 1 – Corporate Victory Party
Join Pittsburgh Organizing Group (POG) for a satirical, pre-emptive “celebration” of corporate power featuring The Flash Darlings, Two Sexy Beasts, Styles for Modern Living, Aydin, Radical Cheerleading and spoken word. The Eye (4814 Penn Ave., Garfield), 9pm-1am.

November 2 – Day of Direct Education and Outreach
Educate voters on the need for systemic change and help leaflet “Don’t Just Vote” materials at polls around town.

November 3 – Post-Election Day Rally and March
Come to demand an end to war abroad, justice at home and real change. Organized by POG. Begins at SEI (4500 Fifth Ave., Oakland) 5:30pm.

November 6 – Town Meeting
Thomas Merton Center and Students in Solidarity present “Building a Progressive Movement.” William Pitt Union Ballroom (5th and Bigelow, Oakland). 10am to 2pm.

Followed by a Mass March and Rally:
Time to end the war and occupation. Organized by Thomas Merton Center’s Anti-War Committee. William Pitt Union Patio (5th and Bigelow, Oakland). 3:30pm. For more info, contact 412-361-3022.
