A Survivor Speaks Out

On June 13, 1983 at the University of El Salvador, a man asked the Agricultural Engineering Professor to move his car.  That professor was then beaten savagely by members of the National Police. From then on few things were certain for Professor Carlos Mauricio:  He was certain he was a dead man. He was certain he was disappeared.

He was certain he would be tortured.

Ten days later Carlos reappeared from the prison. After being forced to stand for days, after being forced to listen to the screams coming from the walls, after being hoisted into the air by his hands, which were tied behind his back, after being beaten with a metal bar...

Today Carlos speaks out about this atrocity and many others like it. It was this story of horror and hope that was told this fall at the University of Pittsburgh, Community College of Allegheny County and Erie, PA (Carlos spoke at the urging of WPA-SOAW).

You see, the two generals who ordered his torture (Jose Guillerino Garcia and Carlos Eugenio Vides Casanova) were trained at the infamous US Army’s SOA/WHINSEC; a combat training school at Fort Benning, Georgia. Western PA-SOAW is a section of the National SOAW, which works to close the SOA/WHINSEC. There will be a variety of speakers and events within the next few months that deal with the issues of SOA/WHINSEC.  For more information on these events check out our website at www.thomasmertoncenter.org/soa or email us at: info_wpasoaw@yahoo.com.
