From the Director:

Summer is upon us, and we in Pennsylvania are bracing ourselves to be inundated with hot-air political ads that will likely do more to distract and confuse, than clarify and set clear policy priorities, for our nation. At times like these, I continually remind myself that politicians exist to seek power, not to build power. The work of building power democratically through a mass movement belongs to us. And one such inspiring and effective movement for change is being built by the dedicated activists of Save Our Transit. Save Our Transit has been credited for playing a crucial role in getting us this close to a real victory for public transit funding throughout the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. They demonstrate that tying up phones and fax machines, consistent visits to Harrisburg, street theatre and protest, and other forms of direct action are still the most effective ways for the non-wealthy to "get the goods." And along with the members of PUSH, we hope that thousands will join us in building such a movement for "Health Care Not Warfare," culminating in a massive rally and march on Sunday, August 15, through downtown Pittsburgh.

We at the Thomas Merton Center are also grateful for the many people who supported the "Chesapeake," "Dead Man Walking" and Community Partners Concert fundraisers for the TMC. Your support is more vital than ever to keep hope alive and win real victories by building the movement for peace and justice, both at home and abroad, before, during and after the November elections. See you in the streets!
