March 20 (Page 2)
March 20, 2004 marked the one-year anniversary of the official start of the US
war on Iraq. Millions of people around the world took to the streets to register
dissent. These pages are a compilation of Pittsburgh's efforts. A mass march and
rally was organized by the Anti-War Committee of the Thomas Merton Center as
part of a weekend full of powerful and inspiring events.
Other weekend highlights included Friday's Empty Shoes and Memories, a
memorial commemorating the victims of war and violence; a health and first-aid
workshop hosted by Three Rivers Action Medics; a screening of "Uncovered; the
Truth About the Iraqi War" sponsored by Amnesty International; a silent peace
vigil; a teach-in organized by Pax Christi and the Western PA Coalition to Close
the School of the Americas; a peace picnic with food provided by Food Not Bombs;
a Palestine Solidarity Committee action that smashed a recreation of Israel's
apartheid wall; a sit-in at Carnegie Mellon University organized by Pittsburgh
Organizing Group following the permitted march; a Saturday night "War and
Resistance" concert featuring music by Mike Stout, and a Sunday Pittsburgh
Indymedia video screening.

Peace. The local group collects food that is perfectly fine but would
otherwise be wasted and serves hot, delicious meals twice a week in Oakland
and Market Square to people that are hungry. (Photo by Jane Ashcroft) |
